"Haxhi Zeka" University in Peja has today marked the 14th anniversary of its founding, a moment of institutional reflection and affirmation of the role that the university has built over the years in higher education, scientific research and the socio-economic development of the Dukagjini region and all of Kosovo.
The roots of higher education in Peja extend back to 1960, with the creation of the High School of Economics and Commerce, an institution that for decades trained the first economics professionals in the country and served as the basis for building today's academic capacities.
This tradition culminated on November 14, 2011 with the establishment of “Haxhi Zeka” University, a historic decision supported by visionaries, professors, intellectuals and community representatives. Despite initial challenges, the institution rose on the hard work, idealism and dedication of the first academic and administrative staff, who built the foundations of a university that today has an international role.
Today, UHZ is an accredited institution for five years., with five faculties, over 20 study programs at bachelor, master and doctoral levels, and thousands of students who over the years have chosen this institution as the basis of their professional and academic careers. The university has also been awarded the certificate of excellence by the Kosovo Accreditation Agency for its internal quality processes. The Rector of UHZ, prof.dr. Armand Krasniqi emphasized that “‘Haxhi Zeka’ University is today a stable, consolidated institution with advanced quality standards. These 14 years have been years of work, dedication and deep institutional transformation. Today we have a university that operates according to the principles of academic integrity, innovation and international cooperation. We have established new academic centers, increased scientific research capacities and become part of important European projects that increase our profile and influence..”
In recent years, Haxhi Zeka University has significantly strengthened its international presence, becoming an active part of European consortia, development projects and academic networks. The University has increased cooperation with partner institutions in Europe and beyond, creating new opportunities for mobility, exchange of experience, capacity building and development of innovative programs. UHZ has also consolidated its role as an organizer of academic events of an international nature, including summer and winter programs, international weeks and scientific conferences that bring researchers, experts and lecturers from many countries of the world to Peja.
One of the most important developments of the recent period is the establishment of the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. – UNI-NOVA, which is creating new spaces for students and academic staff in the field of innovation, entrepreneurship and connection with industry and the public sector. Also, through the Dukagjini Regional Economic Forum (FERD) and the Peja Peace Forum, the university has become an important actor in intersectoral dialogue, economic development and the promotion of a culture of peace.
