{"id":60828,"date":"2026-05-12T10:13:59","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T08:13:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/unhz.eu\/?p=60828"},"modified":"2026-05-12T10:14:28","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T08:14:28","slug":"transformimi-arsimit-te-larte-dhe-tregu-i-punes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unhz.eu\/en\/blog\/transformimi-arsimit-te-larte-dhe-tregu-i-punes\/","title":{"rendered":"The University in the Face of Exponential Change: Is Higher Education Keeping Up with the Pace of Market and Industry Transformation?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Prof. Dr. Armand Krasniqi<\/em><br>Rector of Haxhi Zeka University<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The discussions held within the framework of the 11th Conference of the South-Eastern Europe and Western Balkans Rectors' Forum, which is being held on 11\u201312 May 2026 in Ljubljana, highlighted one of the greatest challenges facing higher education today: the increasingly obvious inability of traditional universities to keep up with the pace of rapid technological, economic and industrial transformations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The numerous presentations and discussions of panelists, international experts, and university leaders confirmed a reality that is already present in almost all modern societies: the labor market and industries are transforming at an unprecedented speed, while universities still operate on organizational and academic models that were built for much more stable and less dynamic times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most discussed issues during the conference was precisely the fact that the cycle of changes in the industry, especially in the technological, digital, financial and artificial intelligence sectors, is occurring on average within 18 months, while the creation, accreditation and implementation of a new university program often requires three to five years. This creates a serious gap between the real needs of the market and what universities manage to offer through study programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this sense, universities are facing a major institutional paradox: they continue to prepare students for professions that change faster than the university studies cycle itself. Some of the technical knowledge that a student acquires in the first year of studies may already be partially outdated by the time he graduates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This phenomenon should not be understood as a failure of universities, but as the result of a much deeper global transformation, which is changing the very nature of knowledge, profession and work. For decades, universities have functioned as relatively stable institutions of knowledge transfer. Today, however, knowledge is no longer static. It is being produced, updated and replaced at exponential rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In many fields, especially in technology, finance, artificial intelligence, digital marketing, automation, and the data-driven economy, professional skills have an increasingly shorter \u201clifespan.\u201d This is forcing higher education to reconsider not only the content of programs, but the very philosophy on which the traditional university model is built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most important messages articulated during the conference was that the university of the future can no longer be just an institution of formal graduation, but must become a dynamic platform for lifelong learning. In this context, it is becoming increasingly clear that the university degree can no longer be considered the \u201cfinal product\u201d of education, but rather the beginning of a continuous process of professional updating and retraining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Precisely for this reason, many European universities are gradually moving towards more flexible models of academic organization, including micro-credentials, short-term modules, hybrid programs, co-creation of curricula with industry, innovation labs, and much greater integration of professional practice into the learning process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another very important dimension of the discussions concerned the fact that technological transformations are not only affecting technical professions. Law, economics, banking, public administration, tourism, media, education and healthcare are also undergoing profound transformation processes due to artificial intelligence, automation and digital platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that universities cannot continue to be organized on the traditional logic of isolated disciplines. The modern market demands interdisciplinary competencies, adaptability, critical thinking, creativity, professional ethics and the ability to manage change. These are precisely the competencies that universities must place at the center of their future reforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this context, Western Balkan universities face a dual challenge. On the one hand, they must align with European standards of quality, internationalization and scientific research; while on the other hand, they must respond to the rapid transformations of local and regional labor markets, which often change faster than the institutional capacities of universities themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this is precisely where the greatest opportunity for the region's most dynamic and flexible universities lies. Universities that manage to build strong connections with industry, municipalities, the private sector, innovation centers, and local development ecosystems will be the ones that will manage to remain relevant in the coming decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The discussions at the Rectors\u2019 Forum of Southeast Europe and Western Balkans clearly showed that higher education is entering a new historical phase. The greatest challenge is no longer just the creation of knowledge, but the institutional capacity to learn, transform and react at the same pace as modern society is transforming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the end, the essential question is no longer whether universities should change.
